Ultra athlete on overcoming addiction: 'Ramp up your passions, do something different'
A record-breaking ultra long-distance runner will be taking part in a Q&A session tomorrow night (18 April) in support of Hospice Isle of Man and Motiv8 Addiction Services.Jack Scott holds the record for the fastest time to complete the 268-mile Montane Spine Race, finishing in 72hrs 55mins 5secs and beating the previous course record set by Jasmin Paris (2019) by more than 10 hours. He'll be visiting the Isle of Man this weekend to take part in the Manx Mountain Marathon (Saturday, 19 April) which sees participants race across a 50km route from Ramsey to Port Erin. The race route passes over the Island's northern fells, including Snaefell.Runners then undertake a trail section into St John's, where the Half Mountain Marathon entrants join in for the southern section.First contested in 1970, this will be the 53rd edition of the event. Before the race on Saturday, Jack will join elite Manx runners Nikki Arthur and Orrin Smith on Friday evening for an informal question and answer session at IQEQ on Victoria Road in Douglas between 6pm an 8pm.In his early twenties Jack used running as a method of overcoming his gambling addiction, and the session promises to give audience members the chance to hear inspiring stories and ask their own questions.Ahead of his journey to the Isle of Man, Jack spoke with Manx Radio about becoming 'clean' from his addiction and why he believes long-distance running is a sport for 'all shapes and sizes'.
AGENDA:
-
Agenda 14.4.25 - with recorded deaths significantly exceeding births what is the implication for the Isle of Man?
Paul Craine has been researching our population for well over 40 years and he’s concerned about the Manx birth rate falling to it’s lowest since 1920. Births in the Isle of Man are now 43.9% lower than in 2010 with just 574 babies born last year. What’s causing this trend and how concerned should we be about it? Paul Craine joins me on this evening’s Agenda at 5.30pm on Manx Radio to consider these weighty issues. Demographer Paul Morland outlines the extent of the global decline in births and concludes that: “…governments can have no higher priority than addressing the demographic question”. He advocates “…the making of a pro-natal (pro-birth) culture” and suggests that this is “a role for all of us”. Reckon I’m getting too old for that sort of thing.

PERSPECTIVE:

Perspective 20.4.25 - Rev Sean Turner reflects on community, love and faith.
The Rev Sean Turner has been a Methodist Minister in the south of the Island for the past five years but will be leaving the Island shortly to return to his home in North Carolina. He talks to Perspective about changes in society and community, love and faith. Does faith still have a place in society and if so why has there been such a big shift away from the church in the past few generations. That’s Perspective this Easter Sunday at 12 noon on Manx Radio with me Phil Gawne. Has the societal shift away from community towards individualism thrown the baby out with the bath water
