Work ahead for 2029 Island Games

But IGAM thrilled at prospect of home event in four years

Those behind the host team for the 2029 Island Games are thrilled to see the event returning in a few years, but say plenty of work lies ahead between now and then.

Gary Jakeman and Jill Gillings of the Island Games Association of Mann (IGAM) are responsible for all the Isle of Man squad's preparations for each games.

This will include travel and accommodation requirements for the next two events in 2025 (Orkney) and 2027 (Faroe Islands) with Mr Jakeman already warning costs in those areas are 'not going to be cheap.'

At last year's games in Guernsey around 250 people represented the Manx flag in July 2023.

Meanwhile, 2029 will be the third time the Isle of Man has hosted the event having also held the inaugural competition in 1985 and then again in 2001.

Fourteen sports will form the event, they are:

  • Archery
  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Cycling
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Gymnastics
  • Squash
  • Swimming
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Triathlon
  • Volleyball

The four Island Games sports to miss out in 2029 will be Bowls, Judo, Sailing and Shooting.

Jill explains IGAM has no role in what sports are selected and does sympathise with those who won't be part of the event in five years time:
