Tennis: Grand Slams galore for Castletown LTC

Report by Neil Ronan

It has been a busy few months at Castletown LTC, with three Grand Slam events taking place, plus a summer slam team event.

The first Grand slam event to take place was the Australian Open, which had 19 competitors. The comp was split into two groups with the final placings decided by each pair playing their opposite pair from the other group.

The final was between Barbie Carter and Alan Macnair versus Cathy Tsitsos and Neri Gricevičius. Barbie and Alan took the win fairly comfortably 10-3.

A 1-point knockout tournament was played straight after the main event with Alan Macnair taking the win.

The club's junior section played a singles event earlier with Jonah Graham taking the win and Cameron Goldie runner-up.

The second Grand Slam to take place was the French Open. Eighteen players entered and this was played as a straight round robin with the winners decided on overall points won.

This time it was Caroline Davies and Rob Mason’s turn to take the win, losing only one of their matches and finishing on a total of 67 points. In second place was Alan Macnair and Nick Fullerton, again finishing on 67 points but losing out on count back having lost to Caroline and Rob. The one point knockout was won by Neri Gricevičius.

The junior section again played a singles tournament with Cameron Goldie the winner this time with Matthew Ashley runner-up.

The third Grand Slam which took place recently was Wimbledon. A slightly lower entry than normal saw fourteen players entered. Again, played as a round robin with all pairs playing each other. Rob Mason took his second win, this time alongside Peter Skelton. The pair finished unbeaten with a maximum 60 points followed in the runners-up spot by Kirree Ronan and Peter De Carte on 54 points. Rob completed a successful evening winning the one point knockout. In the junior section Ryan Holland took his first win with Tilly Neel in the runner-up spot.

The other event which took place recently was the clubs Summer Slam Team event. Teams were either entered as a four or placed into a team. All 1st pairs played each other and all second pairs played each other in a round robin format, with points totals combined for their team. Running alongside this were a number of side events for the teams to have a chance to gain extra bonus points.

In the 1st pairs the Team D of Michaela Duchonova and Nick Fullerton finished top with Team B of Alan Macnair and Yanchun Wang second. In the 2nd pairs Cathy Tsitsos and Ron Ronan of Team D were top with Team A pair of Ruth Donnelly and Janet Corkish second. The bonus rounds were won by Team B. Once all the scores were added together it was Team D of Cathy, Ron, Michaela and Nick that finished the afternoon on 41 points with Team B of Alan and Yan plus Judy and Chris Bell on 36 points the runners-up.
