Rugby: Ashton-Under-Lyne take spoils at Ballafletcher

Vagas ladies lose out at Bury and Ramsey win in Manx Shield

Report by Dave Christian:

It was a tight enough game at Ballafletcher but Vagas just lost out 32-24 to Ashton-under-Lyne in Counties 3 ADM Lancs/Cheshire.

'Vagas' took an early lead through a Tom Gascoyne try converted by Cam Findlay; Ashton then pulled one back before Dave Keenan crossed for Vagabonds.

Findlay’s second conversion gave them a 14-5 lead; Ashton then grabbed the game by the scruff of its neck and ran in four unanswered tries to lead 27-14 at half time.

Despite 'Vagas' pressure after the break Ashton grabbed another; with 15 to play Keenan bagged his second of the game and with ten to play Josh Modin went in for Vagas’ bonus point - the comeback however stopped there.

Vagabonds ladies lose out at Bury

In Womens NC2 North (South) there was no luck for Vagabonds as they lost 29-17 away at Bury.

Maylyn Campbell went in for two of Vagabonds’ three tries with Becka Hicks getting the third, Sammie Macdonald converted two of the three.

The result will leave Vagas in fourth with just two to play but their chances of a top two finish have dwindled considerably.

Ramsey beat Nomads in Manx Shield

Ramsey won the Shield clash with Southern Nomads at the Mooragh Park 58-19.

Number eight Josh Corteen led the field with four tries and there was also a hat-trick from skipper Matt Meechan.

After a scoreless opening ten Corteen opened his account; Meechan swiftly followed and further scores from Brandon Atchison, Ste Kneale and Meechan swiftly followed with Tom Moffatt adding three conversions to give Ramsey a 31-0 half time lead.

Corteen got his second just after the break before Ollie Howard hit back for Nomads; Corteen then went in for tries tree and four to make it 46-5.

Mark Young struck back for Nomads but Ramsey weren’t to be denied - Will Millsopp crossed for a try and there was just time enough for Meechan to complete his hat trick.

Jared May crossed to give Nomads a late consolation with Mark Young adding the extras.
