More misery for the champions

Reigning champions Rushen United’s season went from bad to worse as they suffered a third defeat in four games.

They went down 3-1 at home to Corinthians to continue their miserable start to their campaign.

And after taking just three points from their opening four games, it now looks highly unlikely they will be in the race to defend their title.

Their cause was not helped by the 20th minute dismissal of Jack Saxon.

Rushen led at that stage through Jordan Watterson but Danny Gerrard equalised before the break and a second half own goal and a Nigel Moody goal sealed a surprise success for Corinthians.

St Mary’s remain the early leaders with a 100 per cent record after a 3-0 win at Ramsey – Marc Priestnal and Golden Boot holder Steven Priestnal (two) were the marksmen.

Peel are hot on their heels, just narrowly behind on goal difference, after winning 4-1 at Michael.

Lee Gale notched two, one from the penalty spot, with Johnny Myers and Terry Rigaux grabbing the others.

Matthew Brand netted the home side’s consolation.

Castletown earned their first point of the season and ended the 100 per cent record of St George’s at the same time with a disciplined showing at the Stadium.

Kevin Cain slotted home a loose ball to give them a 15th minute lead and, although St George’s dominated – levelling through the returning Callum Morrissey on the hour – a battling team display and a dogged rearguard action ensured a share of the spoils.

Laxey ended Ayre’s perfect start back in the top flight with a 5-1 win at Glen Road.

Lee Cowley was the star of the show with a hat-trick.

Ross Williamson and Johnny Callow also scored for the Miners with Jason Craine on target for the Tangerines.

Gymns came from behind to record a 5-3 victory over newly promoted Douglas Royal at Tromode.

Royal looked on course for a good result when they led 3-1 at the break, courtesy of goals from Craig Dolman (two) and Dave Skillen.

However, the home side secured their first points of the season thanks to David Rees (two), Luke Fisher (two) and Mark McCarrick.
