'Mixed' reactions over 2026 Commonwealth Games sports

Glasgow was confirmed as hosts this week with smaller ten-sport schedule

The person overseeing the Isle of Man's Commonwealth Games team admits there's been 'mixed' reactions over the sports involved in the 2026 event in Glasgow.

Yesterday it was officially confirmed the Scottish city would hold the event in just under four years time with a reduced programme of ten sports across four venues.

Whilst disciplines like track & field athletics, swimming and track cycling are included, among the sports to miss out are road cycling, triathlon and badminton - all three of which the Island had athletes in at the last games in Birmingham.

Isle of Man team Chef du Mission, Erica Bellhouse says there was initially some 'shock' at what appears to have been left out:

The absence of road cycling in the form of road races or time trial events is a notable omission - the Isle of Man fielded five-strong road race teams in the men's and women's races during the previous games.

Five Manx riders - three female and two male - also took part in the 2022 time trial challenges.

Whilst athletics has made the cut it's currently unclear as to whether it will include the marathon races - in Birmingham in 2022 the Isle of Man's Ollie Lockley and Sarah Webster competing in the men's and women's marathons respectively.

Mrs Bellhouse adds they're unsure at this time whether the amount of disciplines featuring in athletics and swimming will be reduced or if they will run with a full programme.
