Sir Mark Cavendish confirms cycling retirement this weekend

Manx Missile to contest final race in Singapore tomorrow

Sir Mark Cavendish will finish his illustrious professional cycling career this weekend.

The 'Manx Missile' has announced the news on social media ahead of taking part in tomorrow's Tour de France Singapore Criterium.

In his update, Cavendish says: "I am lucky enough to have done what I love for almost 20 years and I can now say that I have achieved everything that I can on the bike.

"Cycling has given me so much and I love the sport, I’ve always wanted to make a difference in it and now I am ready to see what the next chapter has in store for me".

He has also been speaking with reporters ahead of what is now known to be his final race:

The 'Manx Missile' is contesting this year's Tour De France Singapore Criterium with Astana Qazaqstan tomorrow (10 November).

Sir Mark made history in July to win an unprecedented 35th Tour de France stage, breaking the previous record set by cycling legend Eddie Merckx.

He was made a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) in the 2024 King's Birthday Honours List for 'his outstanding contribution to the sport of cycling, his on-Island and off-Island charity work and as a sporting ambassador for the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man.'

He then received his knighthood at Windsor Castle in October from HRH Prince of Wales and in doing so became the first person from the Isle of Man to be knighted since Sir Norman Wisdom 24 years ago.

Along with his Tour de France honours, Cavendish's glittering career also includes 17 Giro D'Italia stage wins and Olympic silver in the Omnium at the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.

He's also a triple world madison champion having won with Great Britain in 2005, 2008 and 2016

Elsewhere he won Commonwealth Games gold for the Isle of Man in the scratch race in Melbourne in 2006 and won the World Road Race Championship in Copenhagen in 2011.
