IoM reveals which sports would feature in 2029 Island Games

Organisers seeking almost £2m to improve sports facilities if Island is confirmed as host in July

The committee behind the Isle of Man's plans to host the Island Games in 2029 is seeking almost £2m to prepare for the event after announcing which sports will be included.

The Island is expected to be confirmed as the hosts of the 22nd edition of the games when the International Island Games Committee holds its Annual General Meeting in Orkney in July.

As host, the Island gets to choose which sports are included, and says factors it considered included the number of female competitors, environmental issues and cost.

The sports selected are:

  • Archery
  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Cycling
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Gymnastics
  • Squash
  • Swimming
  • Table-tennis
  • Tennis
  • Triathlon
  • Volleyball

The organisers say that in a bid to deliver a sustainable games, the majority of sports will be contested in and around Douglas.

The Isle of Man Government has committed to improve some sports facilities, including the athletics track at the NSC, if the bid is confirmed.

With the games expected to bring in around 4,000 visitors, Education, Sport and Culture Minister Daphne Caine believes the investment will be worthwhile:
