Southern side edge out intense contest against Onchan
Rushen United have added more silverware to the cabinet for the season after their Under-21's beat Onchan 2-1 in last night's Kirby Estates Cowell Cup final.
In a tightly-contested affair at The Bowl, Rushen took the lead inside eight minutes thanks to Adam Cooil's low drive into the corner of the net.
But Onchan responded swiftly to level things nine minutes later as an accurate cross on the left from Billy Coulter found Ethan Leivers who calmly slotted home for 1-1.
Whilst Onchan then applied more pressure in search of the lead, Rushen stunned them on 38 minutes as Scott Mason took advantage of some confusion in the Onchan backline to smash a strike into the roof of net to give the 'Spaniards' a 2-1 lead.
That goal would prove decisive as Onchan, despite their best efforts, were ultimately unable to get level again in the second half as Rushen United would hold out for victory despite seeing striker, Luca Moretta, sent off in second-half stoppage time for a second bookable offence.
The southern side's success in the Under-21 competition follows Rushen's senior combination team securing the Canada Life Combi 1 title for a second time running several weeks ago, with the first team also set to contest the Hospital Cup final against Laxey this coming Saturday (20 May).
Their combi side are also set to be involved in the Ascot Hotel Junior Cup final taking place next Wednesday (24 May).
