Badminton: IoM squad take numerous victories in Bristol

Elsewhere Manx pairing take silver at U17 event in Lancashire

A four-strong Isle of Man badminton squad had a productive outing with numerous victories during competition in England last weekend.

Tobey Cheng, Annelise Mellor, Matt Nicholson and Kitty Thomas formed the Manx team taking part in the Bristol Senior Bronze on Saturday, 16 December.

In the mixed doubles, Mellor and Nicholson took a three-set win in their opening group match before a three-set defeat in their second Group D contest to just miss out on the knockout phase.

Elsewhere, in the open singles, Cheng started with a straight sets win over Ben Chater before losing in two sets to number one seed, Kishen Lee.

There was a straight sets victory on the board for Mellor in Group B of the women's singles against Serena Farrelly followed two losses in her remaining two games.

Thomas had a tough start in the women's singles Group A with defeat to number one seed Jessica Randall, but after a narrow loss in her second match too Thomas rounded out her group campaign with a straight-sets win over Susan Tooke.

Cheng and Nicholson linked up for the open doubles but were unable to make it out of a difficult Group A.

Meanwhile, there was success for young Island competitors Tommy Cheng and Lok Cheung at the Lancashire U17 Bronze in Leigh on Sunday (17 December).

The pairing claimed a silver medal after reaching the finals of the U17 open doubles, only losing out to number one seeds Andrew Hardaker and Krish Milan.
