Badminton: IoM begins European event in Cyprus

Team contesting second Small States of Europe team championships

The Isle of Man badminton squad has begun its latest campaign at an international event.

The Manx team is taking part in the second edition of the Small States of Europe Badminton Team Championships which this year are being held in Nicosia, Cyprus from 1-3 November.

In total, six players are representing the Island there over the next three days, three male and three female.

The female competitors include Leah Brennan, Jessica Li and Annelise Mellor whilst Alexander Buck, Matthew Nicholson and Baillie Watterson are the trio of male participants.

Today (1 November) sees the group stage of the tournament take place - the Isle of Man is in Group C and face Greenland this morning which began at 10am local time (8am UK time) before taking on Malta this afternoon at 2.30pm local time (12.30pm UK time).

Six other nations are involved in the event - the hosts Cyprus along with Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Monaco.

It's the second time the Isle of Man has entered the championships after it also contested the inaugural event in Malta last year.
