Athletics: Sarah Astin secures GB spot for European championships

Manx athlete to contest 10km race in Belgium next month

Manx athlete Sarah Astin has been selected for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland squad to compete at the 2025 European Road Running Championships next month.

The Belgrave Harriers competitor is part of the women's team to take on the 10km race at the inaugural event being held in Leuven, Belgium on 12-13 April.

She's one of six runners involved in the female 10km squad alongside Phoebe Anderson, Jenny Nesbitt, Verity Ockenden, Beth Potter and Amelia Quirk.

British Athletics says the event itself will 'combine elite race championships with mass participation opportunities' and will also feature marathon and half-marathon races.

Earlier this year, Astin broke her own Manx record for the 10km women's road race, posting a time of 32 minutes and 20 seconds at the Valencia Ibercaja 10k on 11 January.

That was 15 seconds quicker than her previous Island national benchmark which had been set at the Trafford 10k back in March 2023.
