She's spent time away from competition to focus on career
A Manx athlete has produced a brilliant race comeback after several years away from competition.
Gemma Astin rose through the junior athletics ranks on Island but has spent some time away from competitive action over the last few years to focus on her career as a strength and conditioning coach.
However, Gemma took part in the ten-mile Great South Run in Portsmouth last weekend (16 October), recording a time of 58 minutes and eight seconds.
This saw her take the eighth-fastest female time in the mass race during the event and it was the quickest non-elite female time.
Gemma's time was also only 62 seconds off the Isle of Man record for that distance.
The record is currently held by Gemma's younger sister, Sarah, who represented the Isle of Man in the women's 5000m at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
