2029 Island Games 'can be legacy for future generations'

Minister also responds over sports left out of event in five years time

The 2029 Island Games on the Isle of Man can be a 'legacy for future generations'.

That's the belief of the Education, Sport & Culture Minister who insists her department will pull out 'all the stops' to make sure the Island's facilities are completed on time for the event.

After the Isle of Man was confirmed as the host of the event in five years time last weekend, Daphne Caine says an organising committee will be formed going forward involving the leads of all the sports which will be involved.

A number of areas of work have been identified to bring facilities up to scratch for the event including refurbishments to the athletics track and grandstand at the NSC as well as the artificial surface at The Bowl stadium.

Along with stating money has been set aside for such works, Mrs Caine also believes that the economic benefit of the games will be 'well in excess of any investment.'

Meanwhile, the 14 sports which will feature in 2029 were confirmed back in May - the disciplines which will miss out in that year will be bowls, judo, sailing and shooting.

Mrs Caine says she understands those sports will be disappointed but that the criteria for selecting which would be included was clear from the outset:
