Tynwald debates climate targets as Middle MHK calls for review

However, government is bound by the Climate Change Act 2021 to meet specific targets

Tynwald members are continuing to debate whether or not the Council of Ministers should carry out an 'urgent review' of the Isle of Man's net-zero targets and associated budgets.

Middle MHK Stu Peters is calling for a more pragmatic approach to climate change, focusing on strengthening the wider economy.

Mr Peters is a vocal critic of the government’s allocation of more than £40 million to the Climate Change Transformation Board's fund.

Despite this request, the Island’s current net-zero targets and interim goals are enshrined in law, meaning they cannot be delayed or reduced.

The only legal adjustments allowed are to bring deadlines forward or to increase the required percentage of emissions reductions.

Chief Minister Alfred Cannan has previously acknowledged the government faces challenges in meeting its 2030 interim target of a 35 percent reduction in emissions.

Failure to achieve this milestone would put the Isle of Man in breach of its own legislation.

Tynwald members already spent a long time debating the topic yesterday (Tuesday 10 December), and two amendments have been tabled so far.

Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper wants the whole motion to be changed to say that Tynwald 'recognises the role Net Zero targets play in strengthening the Manx economy for the benefit of all Island residents'.

However Julie Edge, member for Onchan, wants to add some words at the end of Mr Peter's original motion, suggesting that Government should submit a report to Tynwald on the matter by the end of April 2025 and it should be debated before the end of the present parliamentary session.

The debate continues in Tynwald today (Wednesday 11 December), and you can listen live here.
