Two people arrested after 'suspicious items' found in Port Erin

61 homes evacuated as a precaution

Two people have been arrested after 'suspicious items' were found at an address in Port Erin, leading to 61 homes being evacuated.

It's after an incident in the Pairk Beg estate yesterday afternoon (8 September).

While the site has been deemed to be safe by specialists from the UK, police say the cordon will remain in place this morning.

Residents within 100m of the property were evacuated as a precautionary measure, but were told in the early hours that they could safely return home.

An address in Creggan Lea, Port St Mary was also investigated as part of the operation, where the arrests took place.

Superintendent Danny Rotchell has been co-ordinating the response to the incident.

He says: "Our number one priority is the safety of the public and I am grateful to those effected for their patience and understanding given the disruption caused.

"This remains an active and ongoing investigation but I want to reassure the community that there is no wider threat to the public at this time.

"The property in Pairk Beg will remain cordoned off, with a visible police presence in the area.

"I can confirm that two people have been arrested and are currently assisting with our investigation."
