Tributes to 'Island's oldest resident'

Winifred Alice Appleton - picture supplied by family

Winifred Appleton was 106 when she died earlier this month

The funeral of 'the oldest person on the Isle of Man' has taken place today (27 August).

Winifred Alice Appleton was 106 when she died on 14 August.

Her family say she was the oldest person on the Isle of Man.

She was born in 1918 and lived in East Sussex until she moved to the Island 25 years ago; she had eight great-great-grandsons and another on the way.

Describing her as a ‘very strong, independent woman’ her family say she lived independently in Ramsey, with some family help, up until July this year.

They told Manx Radio: “You didn’t leave her flat until you’d had tea and biscuits! She loved visits from her friends and family but when she was ready, she always said ‘you can go now!’”.
