"Too many people dying by suicide", says prevention lobbyist

But ManxPACT worries health services are overwhelmed and cannot cope

A suicide prevention lobbyist is urging Tynwald to take further steps in implementing the government's suicide prevention strategy.

Current statistics suggest there were 14 verdicts of suicide last year, which puts the Isle of Man at a higher rate per 100,000 than in the UK.

However, the time taken from a person’s death to their inquest verdict, and registration of death, can be significant, meaning not all 14 deaths may have occurred during 2023.

Juan Moore has openly shared his own mental health struggles and subsequently established ManxPACT, a support network offering a friendly face to those in need.

Mr Moore speculated why he thinks actioning the plan might be proving troublesome:

D Matt Tyrer, Director of Public Health Isle of Man said: "Since the Suicide Prevention Strategy was published, a number of actions have been implemented.

"There has been significant progress in developing the Island’s mental health service, the emergence of partners from the community, faith and voluntary sector dedicated to suicide prevention, the introduction of BarberTalk and more Island-wide suicide prevention training.

"It is important, however, to remember that suicide prevention is a long term strategy. It aims to equip generations with the tools needed to help to protect their emotional health and wellbeing, so although a lot of work is being undertaken now, we know that the impact will be seen over months and years.

"Because the causes of suicide are so complex, the strategy draws on agencies across government, the third sector and the community. We are all involved in delivering the strategy, as preventing suicide is everyone’s business.
