Tips shared by police ahead of Hop Tu Naa

Plan your route, let someone know and stay local

As hundreds of children - and more than a few Mums and Dads - start the hunt for the perfect turnip or pumpkin to carve ahead of Hop Tu Naa night, the police have put together some useful tips to stay safe and enjoy one of the Island's oldest cultural traditions.

Hop Tu Naa on 31 October signals the arrival of Winter and is celebrated in various ways around the Island.

Police say it's important to stay safe while having fun and warn that it's not an excuse to be a nuisance or engage in anti-social behaviour.

Most of us remember the thrill of heading out on what's usually a cold, wet night glowing with pride over our meticulously prepared, gruesome looking turnips - often lit by candles - at least for the few seconds, before they are blown out by the wind.

The local constabulary suggests battery operated candles are a safer option, and recommends reflective tape, glow sticks and torches with your costumes so as to be seen whilst out walking.

Also plan your route, let someone know and stay local.

Always be respectful of your neighbours - particularly those from an older generation who might not welcome a knock at the door at night.

Finally, make sure you have warm clothes under your costumes so you can get the most from this ancient Celtic tradition.
