Tinnitus sufferers on the Isle of Man are being urged to come together to find support in numbers.
It’s Tinnitus Awareness Week; the condition affects around one in seven people and is characterised by ringing or buzzing in the ears.
For many it’s a relatively mild condition but it can significantly impact a sufferer’s daily life.
The Manx Deaf Society runs a tinnitus support group.
Chief Executive Lucy Buxton said: "Tinnitus affects people of all ages but it becomes more common as we age.
"Many people assume the sound is only a ringing in the ears but tinnitus can manifest as a range of sounds.
"I’ve personally experienced tinnitus my entire life.
"I didn’t realise as a child that not everyone hears a sound constantly.
"Through our Tinnitus Support Group we provide a safe and welcoming space where people can share their experiences and explore techniques that may help manage their tinnitus.”
She spoke to Simon Richardson:
On Saturday (8 February) the society will host a free information session on tinnitus.
It will take place at 11am at the Manx Deaf Society’s headquarters at 3 Somerset Road in Douglas and provide valuable insights into tinnitus, its effects, and strategies to help manage it.
