'Three lives saved' as Port Erin RNLI called out in deceptive sun

Strong offshore wind present in south of the Island despite lovely weather

Port Erin RNLI has issued a warning about deceptive weather after it was called out four times on Saturday afternoon (31 August).

The crew says although the sun was shining in the south yesterday, there was also a strong offshore wind which caught out 11 people in total.

They say eight people were assisted, three lives were saved and 'a scutch of paddleboards recovered'.

The service is imploring those planning on hitting the water to 'be prepared, take the right equipment and look out for each other'.

They added: "There were some people today that didn’t know their family were in imminent danger."

The Coastguard assisted the RNLI in the various rescues.

A spokesperson told Manx Radio people were 'blown out to sea and have been unable to paddle against the wind back to the safety of the beach'.

They said: "This has been due to the offshore wind which has been up to 25mph at times.

"Paddling away from shore will feel very easy in these conditions but very difficult to return to shore.

"The signs off an offshore wind include a smooth sea, and the boats anchored in bay facing the shore. In this case, people should consider not going out for a paddle or choosing a different beach with an onshore breeze."
