Think again about Castletown square closure off-season says former MHK

Richard Ronan says further assessment needed.

A former Castletown MHK says plans to pedestrianise the town square all year round need further assessment.

The local authority has applied to close the area to cars on a permanent basis.

But Richard Ronan says the effect off-season might not be so good:

In response Castletown Commissioners Chair Beth Cannan has given us the following response:

In November last year, we proposed the permanent pedestrianisation of Castletown Square as a key initiative to enhance community spaces, improve safety, and boost local business activity.

The advertisement placed by the Department in the Courier marks the conclusion of that request. Contrary to reports in the press and on social media, no further applications have been submitted. Over the summer months, pedestrianisation has transformed the square, making it more accessible and welcoming by removing traffic. This change has allowed residents and visitors to enjoy a more relaxed, open environment.

Additionally, pedestrianisation has supported environmental objectives by reducing noise and air pollution, while creating a safer space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Tourist coaches regularly bring visitors directly into the heart of Castletown from March to November. The pedestrianisation enhances their experience by offering a welcoming, traffic-free space with the stunning backdrop of Castle Rushen, from which they can explore the town.

Looking ahead, once clarity is achieved regarding traffic regulation orders, we plan to engage an urban design specialist to invest in permanent features such as street furniture, seating, and greenery, further enhancing the comfort and appeal of the area. The Square is evolving into a dedicated community space, ideal for local events, markets, and gatherings, helping to establish it as a vibrant social hub for all.

This initiative aligns with the Isle of Man’s Island Plan, which emphasises building great communities by creating vibrant, safe, and welcoming spaces that enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors. Pedestrianisation supports these goals by improving communal areas, enhancing safety, and stimulating local economic activity. Furthermore, it aligns with the Island Plan’s focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility by reducing vehicle emissions and promoting sustainable living.

Given the changing business landscape in Castletown, where many businesses are now service-led or appointment-based rather than traditional retail the creation of a pedestrian-friendly space is a natural progression. By enhancing public spaces and promoting sustainable transport options, the pedestrianisation of Castletown Square aligns with the Island’s vision of fostering a strong, resilient community while advancing both environmental and economic sustainability.

This stance is further supported by the Draft Local Economy Strategy (2024–2034), which aims to enhance local economies through initiatives such as the development of town squares, seen as essential for fostering community engagement, supporting local businesses, and promoting sustainable practices. The focus is on creating vibrant, accessible spaces that reflect the unique character of each town, contributing to the overall economic and social well-being of the community. We believe that, as a town, we are ahead of the curve in this regard.
