Tesco 'proud' of work done to stock Manx producers

Comes as Andreas Meats stops supplying chain from today

Tesco says it's 'proud' of the work being done to stock Manx produce on its shelves.

The supermarket chain has now reopened all of the stores it took over from Shoprite following the deal in 2023.

However some businesses have been expressing concerns about working with the retailer; from today (28 February) Andreas Meats will no longer supply its products.

In a statement the company said its revenues and profit margins from sales to Tesco are well below the expected levels.

It adds it doesn't see this improving enough to generate the commercial outcomes it needs to successfully sustain the relationship and so has ended it and will only be stocking local stores instead.

Davison's has also taken to social media to share its experience of working with the supermarket giant.

Owner Greig Davison says his own workload has increased a lot in the last 14 months, undertaking all the company's production as well as putting all the extra requirements in place to supply Tesco - something he says is another full-time job in itself.

He adds their current forecasts for the next 12 months suggest turnover to be down 50 percent in comparison with the last 12 months trading with Shoprite.

This, coupled with reduced margins and the yearly expense of up to £10,000 to meet Tesco accreditation standards, he says means his company will have to seriously look at where to go with supply next year.

One supplier though that has seen some success with Tesco is Allanson's which grows potatoes and other vegetables near Ramsey.

Owner Stuart Allanson has been sharing his experiences:
