Tent and motorhome campsite plan approved

Agricultural land on Summerhill Road in Jurby  will be used

Report from BBC Isle of Man.

Proposals for the creation of a campsite for tents and motorhomes in the north of the Island have been backed by planners.

It would see a section of agricultural land on Summerhill Road in Jurby used for 15 pitched tents, 10 motorhomes and three shepherd style huts.

The site has been used by the Isle of Man Motor Caravan Club for the parking of vehicles since the 1990s, and is otherwise used for livestock grazing.

Planning Committee member Sam Skelton said that while countryside should be protected, the quality of the agricultural land was "poor" and the plans supported the government's tourism objective.

The plans also include a reception office, along with toilet and shower facilities.

A report by the planning officer who recommended the proposals were approved, said the visual impact of the change would be mitigated by the planting of trees to act as a screen.

Given the "limited scale and intensity of the proposed development" the proposals were considered "acceptable" in terms of visual impact, the report said.

The impact would be greatest from end of March to end of October, in particular during TT and Manx Grand Prix, it added.

Applicant Andrew Brew said the proposals would diversify his income streams and the facility would be in keeping with the surrounding area.

But objectors argued the plans would affect the "peaceful nature" of Jurby East.

Planning committee member Matthew Warren requested conditions were put in place to limit the period of time that a campervan could remain at the site.

While fellow committee member Adele asked for a restriction on loud music after 22:00 GMT.
