Suspended sentence for son who bit his mother on the head

Magistrates tell 25-year-old he committed 'despicable' offence

A Douglas man who bit his mother on the head after an argument over an iPad has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

Morgan William Askew, of Gorsecroft, attacked the woman in her bedroom on 9 November; when police arrested him he also kicked an officer in the jaw.

The 25-year-old had also been arrested a day earlier after reports that he was pushing bins over and climbing in the hedges behind Cronk-y-Berry Primary School.

Officers found him straddling a fence and when they tried to detain him he began shouting, swearing and actively resisting them before headbutting a police van twice.

He later admitted four offences – being drunk and disorderly, resisting a peace officer, common assault and assaulting a police officer.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse Askew’s advocate said alcohol had been the aggravating factor in both sets of offences.

Asking the court to note the time his client had spent on remand at the Isle of Man Prison he added: “The last 47 days have been, literally, a sobering experience.”

Imposing a 14-week custodial sentence, which has been suspended for 12 months, and a suspended sentence supervision order Magistrates told Askew his offending was ‘despicable’.

“Assaulting your own mother in her bedroom is just disgraceful,” they added: “You’ve got to turn your life around.”

Magistrates also imposed a six-month licensing ban.
