Rob Callister says the approach was considered during recent negotiations
The Chair of the Public Services Commission says he’s not ruling out the possibility of using a ‘sliding scale’ for future pay awards.
During the latest negotiations for the 2024/25 financial year, union Unite strongly pushed for that approach, arguing that a percentage-based offer disproportionately benefits those on higher salaries compared to those on lower pay grades.
Rob Callister says the idea of a £1.50 per hour increase was considered, but concerns were raised about how it would affect pay differentials between spine points.
It was ultimately decided that this wasn’t the most suitable option.
Instead, a deal was agreed for a four percent increase, followed by a 2.5 percent rise and a £200 lump sum for 2025/26.
Talks on future pay awards are already underway with both Prospect and Unite.
