Serving police officer charged with domestic abuse offence

56-year-old allegedly tracked woman via TETRA radio system

A serving police officer has appeared in court charged with domestic abuse.

Fifty-six-year-old Mark Hempsall allegedly subjected his former partner to psychological and physical abuse between 2017 and June this year.

At Douglas Courthouse today (17 September) the prosecutor told the court he also allegedly tracked her movements using the police radio network.

Bail was granted until his next court appearance on 3 October with conditions that he resides at an address in Port Erin and adheres to an exclusion zone.

The Isle of Man Constabulary has confirmed to Manx Radio that the officer, who has been a PC for 14 years, was charged yesterday (16 September).

A spokesperson added: "This matter is now before the court and we are unable to comment further until the conclusion of court proceedings and internal discipline proceedings.”

 

Update: Mr Hempsall appeared at Douglas Courthouse on 3 October. His case was adjourned for four weeks, and he'll next appear on 31 October; bail continues. 

Update: The case has been further adjourned until 28 November.

Update: The case has been further adjourned until 16 January 2025 for 5,160 pages of WhatsApp messages to be reviewed.

Update: At Douglas Courthouse on 19 December the prosecution withdrew the allegation against Mr Hempsall.
