SALSA accreditation support costs DEFA £120,000

Nine businesses have received help over the last 12 months

Helping nine Manx food producers secure the accreditation needed to be able to sell their goods in supermarkets has cost more than £120,000 over the last year.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has been providing extra support to food businesses and farmers since Shoprite announced its sale to Tesco.

The funds have been used to help producers secure the SALSA - or Safe and Local Supplier Approval - accreditation, which is recognised by several supermarket chains, including Tesco.

DEFA says funding remains in place for further businesses, with the department currently providing 100% of the cost of securing SALSA accreditation.
