Road tax rise comes in

A six per cent increase in road tax has come into effect today.

The change includes a rise in duty used to maintain highways.

It will also address an anomaly that occurred when emission-based duty was introduced, which means two identical cars can be charged different rates.

Infrastructure chiefs admit the cost of running a vehicle is continuing to increase when general standards of living are not, but say it’s essential inflationary costs are met.
