190 years today (Thursday) Sir William Hillary appealed for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea.
Today that service is known as the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and operates 444 lifeboats around Great Britain, Ireland, the Channel Islands and on the Isle of Man.
Sir Hillary was inspired to make his appeal after witnessing the destruction of dozens of ships from his home on Fort Anne Road in Douglas.
President of the fundraising team at Douglas lifeboat station, Peter Cain, says the service wouldn't be possible without the public's generosity:
Airport Director role advertised with top salary of £120,000
Isle of Man economy contracts for second year
Traders on Michael Street feel 'abandoned' by politicians in tough times
Job Centre unable to reliably identify duplicate vacancies
