Review of chief executive role expected ahead of permanent appointment

Chief minister confirms review of CEO responsibilities will take place following Andy Ralphs’ sudden departure

The chief minister says a period of stability and reflection is needed before a permanent chief executive officer for the Isle of Man Government is appointed.

It follows a sudden announcement last month that Andy Ralphs would leave the role with just one week’s notice.

Subsequently, it was confirmed Mark Lewin, the chief officer at the Department for Enterprise, would step in as interim CEO.

Speaking in the House of Keys, Alfred Cannan said a new recruitment process wouldn’t be commenced until at least six months’ had passed, following a review of the scope and responsibilities of the senior role.

The chief minister highlighted the importance of leadership continuity during a period of internal and external pressures, and expressed confidence in Mr Lewin, who brings ‘more than a decade of civil service experience’ and a ‘strong track record in strategic delivery’.

Mr Cannan also noted that recruiting to such a high-level role can take several months, including notice periods and the possibility of relocation if the successful candidate comes from off-Island.

He added that the timing of the 2026 general election is another factor being taken into consideration.
