Remembering William Kennish

The achievements of Manx explorer and inventor William Kennish will be marked at a ceremony in Maughold tomorrow (Monday).

On the 150th anniversary of his death, President of Tynwald Clare Christian will lay a wreath at a plaque in his memory.

The event's been organised by the Isle of Man Victorian Society to ensure Kennish is remembered by future generations.

Before emigrating to America in the 1850s, William Kennish ran a school in Ballasalla, surveyed the Manx coastline for the Royal Navy and took a petition to London deploring the state of the Island's harbours!

But society chairman Robert Stimpson says his greatest achievements were on a larger scale:

The ceremony at Maughold bridge is at 10am on Monday and is open to the public.
