Rapid response would be key to eradicating Asian hornets

No confirmed sightings of the non-native species on Isle of Man

It's important the public reports any sightings of Asian hornets as soon as possible to limit the risk to the public and the Island's bee population.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture says there have been no confirmed reports of the species on the Isle of Man.

The non-native species can cause issues for beekeepers, and is also known to be a public health issue due to the risk of an allergic reaction to a sting from an Asian hornet.

Responding to a Tynwald question from Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh, DEFA confirmed awareness materials are being displayed around the Island to ensure Manx residents can identify the hornets.

The department says rapid response to the occurrence of a queen will be important to achieving eradication, with its officers having been trained by Jersey government in finding Asian hornets, and special equipment has been sourced.

Anyone who spots what they believe to be an Asian hornet can contact pest control on 685894.
