Incident called on many skills crews regularly train in
It happened late yesterday afternoon when he was around 2.5 miles from Douglas Harbour.
At the time of the incident, the sea was moderate to rough from the earlier wind.
Two RNLI crewman, both trained yachtsmen themselves, were transferred to assess the casualty who was in considerable pain.
Rather than transfer him, they took the yacht under lifeboat escort to Douglas Harbour, where they were met by members of the Coastguard and he was then transferred to the care of paramedics.
The volunteer lifeboat crew of the all-weather RNLB Ann and James Ritchie 2, were under the command of Coxswain Mark Kenyon.
He says "having only last week revalidated our casualty care certificates it was a great opportunity to put the skills and equipment to the test.
"The ability to provide pain relief to the casualty and also ensure that his vessel was returned safely to harbour, called upon many of the skills which we regularly train in and we hope the casualty makes a full recovery following his unfortunate injury”
Ramsey Lifeboat left Douglas for Ramsey at 17:55 where it was recovered, washed down and made ready for service by 19:30.
