Question over Island's defence contribution to UK

The annual payments are governed by the Isle of Man Contribution Agreement 1994.

The Isle of Man's contribution of over £3.25 million to the UK for defence in 2020 was nearly double that paid by Jersey.

The discrepancy was revealed in a written answer from the Chief Minister to a Tynwald question tabled by Douglas North MHK, John Wannenburgh.

In his answer, the Chief Minister says the annual payments made by the Manx Government to the UK are governed by the Isle of Man Contribution Agreement 1994.

The contributions from each of the Crown Dependencies are said to reflect the different circumstances and historical arrangements agreed with the UK.

Mr Wannenburgh had tabled a five part question seeking comparative figures between the Islands and the reasons for them. He also asked what metrics are used to calculate payments and whether the Isle of Man Government has a say in the final figure.

The Chief Minister explains that the figure relates to a formula put in place in accordance with Article 3 of the 1994 agreement.
