Public sector rent on the IoM to increase by 5%

DoI says it follows consultation with housing authorities

Public sector rent on the Isle of Man will rise by five percent from April.

The Department of Infrastructure says it follows consultation with the Island’s 15 local housing authorities.

Those living in a one-bedroom property will see a weekly difference of £3.71 from 7 April.

People occupying a four-bedroom property will see a weekly difference of £7.71.

Infrastructure Minister Michelle Haywood said: “The importance of maintaining and developing the Island’s stock of more than 6,200 public sector properties has been a key factor in considering this year’s rise while balancing concerns around affordability for tenants.

“I’d like to thank the local authorities for their input on this issue and look forward to further positive engagement on housing matters over the coming year.”

Tenants whose rent is paid by the Isle of Man Government, as part of their benefits, will automatically have their support reassessed to take into account the new rental costs.

Anyone who believes they will struggle to meet their financial obligations is asked to contact their housing provider.

The DoI says included in this year’s price review is an increase of the total rental income providers are able to use for both maintenance (rising from 30 percent to 32.5 percent) and administration which rises from six percent to seven percent.
