Constabulary confirms nothing referred to it by DESC
Police have not been asked to investigate any 'malicious' correspondence about sex education teaching in Island secondary schools.
The Isle of Man Constabulary says the Department of Education, Sport and Culture has not referred anything to it relating to the Relationships and Sex Education Advisory Curriculum.
In March the department claimed its staff were receiving ‘malicious accusations and comments’ adding they were also being shared on social media.
It followed the start of an investigation into how the curriculum was being delivered which saw independent external investigators appointed to conduct a review.
"The safeguarding and wellbeing of our children, young people and staff is the DESC’s main priority and people are urged to refrain from speculation whilst the facts are established. Malicious accusations and comments, which are being received by our staff and shared across social media platforms, are damaging and are having a detrimental impact. The comments will not be tolerated by the department and such comments will be reported, where appropriate, to the Isle of Man Constabulary.” - The Department of Education, Sport and Culture
The DESC described the correspondence as ‘damaging’ and said it was having a ‘detrimental impact’ adding that it would not be tolerated and would be reported, where appropriate, to police.
Manx Radio asked the department to provide information which showed how many accusations, or comments, it had referred to the Isle of Man Constabulary and the subsequent action taken on each one.
The DESC responded, outside of the required Freedom of Information timescale, to say whilst there had been discussions with police the public authority did not hold the information requested.
Manx Radio asked the Isle of Man Constabulary to provide the same information for the period 1 March to 8 June.
The Isle of Man Constabulary has now confirmed there was no reports made by the DESC in relation to the Relationships and Sex Education Advisory Curriculum in that time period.
