Royal Bank of Scotland Group seek registered building consent
Planning permission is being sought to upgrade the dome in the Isle of Man Bank on Athol Street.
The stained-glass dome visible from the banking floor depicts landmarks of the towns where Isle of Man bank branches existed at the point of construction in 1902.
The Registered Building opened to the public on 9 June 1902 'built and fitted out in an extravagant style from especially imported stone and marble and boasting a beautiful stained-glass dome'.
The current steel, timber and glass enclosure protects the dome from the external elements and is not visible from street level.
However, a survey has shown it is past its serviceable life and requires replacement.
The external enclosure has been leaking and a temporary enclosure has been constructed as options were considered for the replacement enclosure.
If approved, the existing external protective structure would therefore be removed and replaced, to provide better long-term protection.
