Pedestrianisation trial in Ramsey won't be going ahead

39 businesses in the town wrote a letter to the commissioners against the move

Ramsey Commissioners voted against trialling pedestrianisation on Parliament Street during the summer months.

It was brought forward by board member Lamara Craine, who wanted to close the street to vehicles on weekends for four hours.

However, the local authority received a letter against the proposal from 39 retailers in the town and a statement from the Northern Chamber of Commerce which said it 'strongly' objects to the plans.

Concerns were also raised by the chamber about the way businesses were consulted, saying it was 'divisive' and there could be 'wider implications' if the scheme was approved.

Three proposals were brought forward by Ms Craine; these were for an online consultation, a report from staff based on the results of the survey to see what could be offered and then a trial.

However, none of these were voted for, and a further proposal by Commissioner Adam Beighton to not 'pursue' the matter any further was agreed to.
