One of proposals considered but rejected
Manx Care has confirmed there are no plans to close the MEDS service at this time.
In a statement issued this afternoon (Tuesday 22 October) the health body says it was instructed by the former Health Minister to identify how it could achieve financial balance beyond the savings that had already been agreed by the Manx Care Board.
In September, Manx Care says it submitted a confidential document to the DHSC detailing how a further £4 million of savings could be achieved in this year.
The temporary closure of MEDS was on that list, which would save £550,000 for the final six months of the year, but this was considered and rejected by the Manx Care Board as not palatable.
This was because it would have a high adverse impact on the quality and provision of patient care and patient and service user experience.
It comes after Chief Minister Alfred Cannan today provided House of Keys members with a document outlining where savings had been considered.
One MHK, alarmed at the inclusion of potential closing MEDS on that document, pushed for reassurances that it wouldn't happen.
