Committee looking at how Steam Packet operates wants to see new agreement by end of 2025
The chair of a committee looking into how the Steam Packet is run says it needs to operate in a way that puts those using its services first.
The Select Committee on the Regulation of the Steam Packet Company recently published its report, which includes calls for a new sea services framework to be put in place by the end of this year.
It also wants that framework to provide services that support the Island's socio-economic needs.
Jason Moorhouse says the needs of passengers should be a priority:
The committee also recommends the Council of Ministers should consider whether the ferry operator could be run as a statutory board instead of an arm's length company.
The report will be laid before Tynwald later this month and debated at a later sitting.
In response to the publication of the report an Isle of Man Government spokesperson told Manx Radio: "Officers will examine the contents of the report and its recommendations in due course. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."
The Steam Packet Company said: "The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company acknowledges the publication of the Select Committee’s report and its findings.
"While we cannot provide further comment until we have fully reviewed the findings and their potential impact on our operations, we remain committed to our role as the Island’s Lifeline.
"We take this responsibility seriously and continue to work diligently to support the Isle of Man’s economy, our freight customers, Isle of Man residents and visitors to our Island."
