New peer mentors providing 'safe and supportive space' for people struggling with dependency

New peer mentors: Jimmy Thistle, Brian Gilmour and Paul Whipp

'Takeover Tuesdays' initiative underway at Motiv8 Addiction Services

Newly qualified peer mentors at Motiv8 Addiction Services have started weekly sessions to help people struggling with dependency.

The 'Takeover Tuesday' initiative aims to provide a safe space for anyone in need of support with issues around alcohol, drug use, gambling and gaming.

The six peer mentors are all themselves in active recovery and recently completed nine months of rigorous training in order to help other service users.

Manx Radio has been to Motiv8 to speak with Jimmy Thistle, Brian Gilmour, and Paul Whipp:

The charity has described the initiative as a 'fantastic venture' adding: "What makes these sessions particularly special is that each of our peer mentors has been on their own journey of recovery.

"They bring with them a wealth of personal experience and a deep understanding of the challenges people face.

"We at Motiv8 are incredibly proud of this team of peer mentors.

"Their commitment and dedication to their training and to getting these sessions off the ground are truly commendable.

"We believe that their first-hand experience and empathetic approach will make a significant difference in the lives of those who attend the sessions.

"We invite you to join us in supporting this new initiative and to spread the word about Takeover Tuesday.

"If you or anyone you know could benefit from these sessions, please do not hesitate to reach out."

Speak freely without fear of judgement

The upcoming Takeover Tuesday group sessions will be held between 11am-12pm on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, 4 March: Removing hurdles and what support is out there?
  • Tuesday, 11 March: Maintaining motivation
  • Tuesday, 18 March: The importance of time management, structure and routine
  • Tuesday, 25 March: Establishing healthy boundaries

The sessions are held in 'The Hub' at Motiv8. The entrance can be found on the corner of Woodbourne and Murray's Road in Douglas.

"When you are vulnerable, to have someone that's been there before and able to say: 'You're okay, you're not alone. We've been there.' That is paramount for the early days of recovery." - Jimmy Thistle (Peer Mentor)
