New Douglas waste collection scheme is causing 'problems'

Some residents unhappy with the new schedule

There's been some criticism of Douglas Council's new fortnightly waste collection scheme.

Residents have taken to social media to complain about the new system which started on 3 October.

The fortnightly collections are run in parallel, for certain months of the year, with the garden waste service.

Douglas Council says residents are encouraged to check which week their road has been allocated.

Chair of the Environment and Regeneration Committee Falk Horning said: "While these new measures will lead to some savings, the main driver for the change is not financial but for sound environmental reasons.

"As a UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man partner the council is committed to strengthening its green credentials and encouraging responsible waste management behaviours.

"The changes we have introduced will help reinforce the right behaviour. Put simply it’s crucial that we decrease the volume of waste we produce and maximise the amount we recycle in what will be a positive change for Douglas.

"We appreciate there will be a period of adjustment for some with these changes and will work to address any issues.

"We welcome everyone’s support in embracing these changes for the good of our environment.

"Support will be provided to households having difficulty minimising their waste; residents will, however, need to demonstrate they are already using the other waste disposal options provided by the council’s kerbside collection service."

Residents can send any enquiries to refuse@douglas.gov.im or call 696445.
