Musical director to retire from symphony orchestra after gala concert

Maurice Powell has served in role for two decades

The musical director of the Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra will retire this weekend after two decades in the role.

Maurice Powell took up the post in 2004 and has overseen the orchestra's growth into a 'true symphony orchestra'.

His final performance will be a gala concert of classical music by British composers at the Villa Marina this Sunday (24 November).

Maurice told Manx Radio he's "pretty much achieved" everything he wanted to when he took on the job:

You can hear more from Maurice Powell in Manx Radio's Spotlight programme tonight (20 November) at 5.30pm.
