1,400 people donate annually but waiting list continues to rise

People on the Isle of Man are being urged to continue to sign up to become organ donors.

This week marks Organ Donation Week - a campaign that takes place each year to raise awareness about the ongoing need for donors.

According to the NHS, in the UK, more than 7,600 people are in need of a transplant including 250 children.

Each year 1,400 people donate however the waiting list continues to rise.

Here on the Isle of Man the Human Tissue and Organ Donation Act – also known as Daniel’s Law – is expected to come into effect soon.

It will introduce an opt-out system for anyone aged 18 and over.

One family that knows more about organ donation than most is the Martin family.

It follows the death of 21-year-old Lucas who died from meningitis in September last year.

His father Brett told Manx Radio the decision about organ donation was taken out of their hands:

Organ donation is an issue that has touched many more people on the Isle of Man.

Shirley Klieve's son Aedan was born needing a kidney transplant

She says receiving a 'life-saving organ' from a donor in 2023 has helped them as a family:

Noble's Hospital and the Tower of Refuge will turn pink as part of efforts to raise awareness about organ donation.

Meanwhile local charity Organ Donation Isle of Man is holding a walk/tram up Snaefell in memory of organ donors on Friday from 12.30pm.
