MHK urges political colleagues to support investigation into neurodiversity

Follows petition from Dyslexia Advocacy Group

An Onchan MHK is urging his political colleagues to back his proposal to establish a committee to investigate dyslexia, dyspraxia, and dyscalculia on the Isle of Man.

The Dyslexia Advocacy Group submitted a petition on Tynwald Day which aims to improve training and resources for better identification of those who may be neurodiverse.

Rob Callister has expressed concern about the Department of Education's progress on incluseivity - suggesting the government is 'afraid' to use labels.

He'll ask the court at the November sitting to set up the committee and consider the petition.

It would be tasked with examining the incidence of dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and dyspraxia in the Isle of Man and the provision for assisting said population groups in education.

Three members would then review possible solutions, which are documented in the petition, and submit a report to Tynwald by the end of April next year.

Mr Callister is asking that no member of the Department of Education, Sport and Culture or Treasury is allowed to sit on the committee.
