Marginal rise in home schooling numbers on Island

Speaker queries education minister on home education data

A marginal rise has been seen in the number of children leaving DESC schooling and being home educated.

For the 2024/25 academic year, 29 pupils have been registered as being home schooled according to data revealed in a written Tynwald answer published this week.

It's the second year running there's been a small increase in that total - 23 were noted as being home educated in 2022/23 which went up to 26 in 2023/24.

In his query to Education, Sport & Culture Minister Daphne Caine, Rushen MHK Juan Watterson also asked of those who moved into home schooling, how many had been assessed or referred for assessment for additional educational needs during their time in DESC schools.

In response, Mrs Caine sthis information is not recorded as parents and carers are not required to provide this information under the Education Act 2001.
