Manx trumpeters perform in BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall

Russell Gilmour and Sam Kinrade were in unique performance

If you have tuned into the BBC Proms this year, you may have seen some Manx talent gracing the stage.

Aurora Orchestra performed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 on 21 August at the Royal Albert Hall.

Performed entirely from memory, it was broadcast live on BBC Radio and aired on TV this past weekend (30 August).

The performance explored the theme of Beethoven’s hearing loss and featured actors signing live on stage.

In the trumpet section were Russell Gilmour and Sam Kinrade from the Isle of Man.

Russell told Manx Radio committing the near-three-hour piece to memory was quite a challenge:

You can catch up on the performance on BBC Sounds or iPlayer.

A signed version of the performance is available here.

Russell recently published a new book about the trumpet entitled ‘Just’ Natural Trumpet, and he will be donating a copy of it to the Isle of Man Music Service Library very soon.
