Manx Care facing calls to rethink travel vaccine policy

Common travel vaccines have to be obtained privately on IoM

Manx Care is facing calls to reconsider its travel vaccine policy and make more vaccinations free of charge.

It’s after concerns that some travellers to high-risk countries might forgo jabs to save money but at the risk of increasing their vulnerability to serious illness.

Vaccines for Typhoid, Hepatitis A and B, and Diphtheria are among those not offered by Manx Care - instead people are directed to seek them privately.

Lobbyist Fiona Brown contacted MCALS in April to request a review but told Manx Radio progress has been limited:

The Department of Health and Social Care, which put the policy in place, told Manx Radio: "Since 2010 the policy on the Isle of Man has been that all travel vaccines are available on private prescription only. This decision was made to ensure the financial sustainability of services.

The contract with GPs reflects this, and practices are responsible for determining their own fees. Travel advice continues to be provided on the NHS as to what vaccinations are required, and this service is free of charge."
