Lifeboat institution 'committed' to finding long-term solution for Douglas RNLI

Charity says it's working closely with government on 'alternative solutions'

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution says it’s ‘committed’ to finding a ‘long-term solution’ to ensure the sustainability of Douglas RNLI despite it being a challenge.

It follows concerns about the conditions that volunteer crew are currently working under after a delay in finding a new lifeboat house.

Julie called the Manx Radio Mannin Line:

In response the RNLI said it is ‘imperative’ that it finds the best possible location for the city’s base.

A statement from the regional communications manager for Wales, North West and the Isle of Man told Manx Radio:

"Finding a long-term solution to ensure the sustainability of Douglas RNLI into the future has presented us with some challenges.

"We realise this has been a difficult time for all and thank all at Douglas RNLI for their patience.

"It is imperative we find the best possible location to ensure the long-term sustainability of the RNLI in Douglas.

"The RNLI has undertaken an extensive assessment of available site options at Douglas since 2013.

"In 2016 we had hoped to be able to be able to covert the existing RNLI boathouse into a two-storey crew and lifeboat house.

"This work included the construction of a pontoon berth for the lifeboat.

"There were some concerns raised with the proposal and it was not pursued further.

"The RNLI has been working closely with the government to look at alternative solutions for the future.

"As a charity we have a duty to spend our donor's money wisely so are committing to finding the best location to service Douglas RNLI well into the future.

"Douglas RNLI crew continue to operate effectively with the Mersey class lifeboat from the current site."

Manx Radio has invited the Department of Infrastructure to respond.
